Check that your firewall has the exception for file and printer sharing ticked in the firewall. Do NOT turn the firewall off. Go into the tcp/ip properties of you connection on the laptop, from advanced use the wins tab to set always use netbios over tcp/ip. When you apply this it will complain of and empty wins address, over-ride this. Within 20 minutes you should see the desktop appear in your network.
