If life is "not all about me," which implies it's not "all about you," either, then why does no one I've ever met actually "show" that it's "all about us" in their day-today existence?
Even the most wisest person on the planet acted "selfish" more than a few times.
Is this not "hypocritical?"

Everybody in the world is a hyprocrite whether they believe it or not. Not everything follows its meanings.

No, the wisest people on the planet do not think this. Buddhist monks who spend their who lives meditating are anything but. The very goal of Buddhism is to reduce your ego, if you don't have an ego, you don't crave, or you won't be offended easily, and you diminish the very idea of "mine" (since all things are impermenant, its not really "yours"). Notice how people with big ego's are often unpleasant to be around and those that are humble are far more likable? Those who meditate learn to let go of everything, and it is a very valuable skill to develop. It build brain mass in the neocortex, improves your concentration, creativity, and it diminishes your ego because you learn how to let go. Search google for Ajahn Brahm if you are interested.

It is a question of point of view.
to you it is all about you, to me it is all about me.
to others, they think it isn't all about you or me, but it is all about them.
Many people don't realise they are judging others with a double standard than themselves. It isn't being a hypocrite, it is called being ignorant , meaning ignoring reality, not being stupid.
Many in a relationship use this term without fully understanding it, but use it because it sounds condescending and confusing so they figure you won't understand it completely but will know they are talking down to you.
There are times that it does really apply though. It applies to people who always need to be the centre of attention no matter who should be getting the spotlight, they will always find a way if it means breaking their leg.

It is because mankind is not perfect. Does this surprise you? Is steel strong, even though in the past it has been known to fail? Is a dog loyal, even though he once ate the steak you brought home for dinner? Those who respond to imperfections in human nature by declaring humans incapable of good miss the point. I'm sure you have acted selfishly at at least one point in your life, but I am just as sure that you have acted unselfishly at least once in your life. This is not to say that good deeds equal bad deeds, or even that the two can be compared in any reasonable way. But is it logical to decide that if mankind can not be absolutely selfless it should stop trying?
