for your health it is flushing them... but that damages our water supply.
burning them in a fireplace works, but in california chances are you dont have one
if the place you bought them from cannot tell you the best way to dispose of the or do it for you then they are a terrible facility, I would recommend calling, asking for a supervisor and asking the supervisor what their recommendations are.. they have a responsibilty to protect your health and the health of others and if they refuse to help you tell them that and tell them you are going to report them to the California Health Depaertment which liscences them

I always flush own unused medications. Any fish in the sewer are more lucky to die a disease virus the rare chance they would shallow an undissolved pill. Besides, if you live in the country you would have a septic tank.

Medications can be flushed down the toilet. They will dissolve and degrade into less hazardous chemicals. This keeps them out of the hands of those who might be hurt by them. (Children have been known to eat them out of the trash.)
Pharmacies cannot take back medications after they have been dispensed.

call your pharmicist and see if it is ok for you to flush them, otherwise take them to a different pharmacy, and see if they will take them for you.
