Lol! Whether your American or not shouldn't affect whether or not us English like you-that's down to your personality!
To us you certainly have an accent and we spend most of our time trying to see if we can match it!lol! Most people really like to hear an American accent and I think that you will find alot of us will be really interested in what its like in America and where you come from!
The accent will certainly be a point of interest if you're out and you should attract plenty of attention from the opposite sex!lol!
Hope you have a great trip and enjoy your visit to the Uk!

I spent a year in the U.K. and frankly, I was embarrassed by my own countrymen. I am not an elitist or anything (well, maybe I am) but I found out you could spot a typical American a mile away! I saw Americans with five cameras and video recorders strung around their necks, talking too loudly, being pushy and intrusive. I'm a pretty quiet person, and I prefer to quietly assimilate myself if I am in a different country with different codes of behavior. I remember being on the Tube (subway) and these two girls from New Jersey noticed me, and asked loudly, "Hey! You American?" I said quietly, "Yes, I am!" and I'd bought a bunch of books and they rudely asked me, "Why'd you buy so many BOOKS? Have you seen any plays yet? Where are you staying? Wanna hang out with us?" (no) and the interesting thing is, the whole subway car was filled with people, and they all suddenly shut up to listen to us, "The Americans". Now, I'm from California, and I don't have an accent. These girls spoke like Fran Drescher from "The Nanny". I learned while I was in England, that one never blurts out to someone else in the next seat over where they bought such and such. For the most part, I noticed that the English people I encountered (this was in London. It was MUCH friendlier in Manchester) kept to themselves, and spoke quietly. Anyway, sorry for rambling. I hope you have a wonderful time, and believe me, you'll meet some really interesting and genuinely nice people! (never been to Italy, but I've heard it's so beautiful! ) Also, I wouldn't count on getting ice in your drinks...:o(

It depends on your attitude as to whether we'll like you or not. If you come over here with the typical arrogance of many american, then you might have a few problems, but on the whole, we do like americans. As for ice in drinks, then yes you can get it. We do have ice machines in every pub, but one thing I would suggest, is to abandon the american style beers you might find, and try some good british ales from a hand pull. Hubby loves them (he's american).

I hope you enjoy your stay in our country.

you should probably ask "why do Americans love the UK"?

ice is very easy to get these days but when I was first there in 1969 I use to drink at a pup called the Victoria, it is in Lancaster Gate - great pub and very original - I use to have to go up to the publican's apartment to get my ice out of his freezer

"WHY CAN'T THE ENGLISH TEACH THEIR CHILDREN HOW TO SPEAK." (FROM MY FAIR LADY)
I LOVE THE BRITISH ACCENT. AMERICAN ACCENT IS RATHER BLOODY BORING.
