Car electrical problems are expensive because few modern mechanic want to fix them and it can take many hours to trace. Check with the BBB for recommended local service and ask if they specialise in electrical problems. otherwise buy a good VOM meter and prepare to have much fun.

Sometimes "strange" things happen when there is a bad ground (or wire going to the chassis). I'd pop out the switch and look for wires touching, and also make sure any wires under a bolt or screw are clean of oxidation and paint is removed, and that the connection is tight.

Sounds like water in your car may still be causing the shorts. Try to let it dry out, and/or open up the sealed areas that got wet to let them dry.
