Bill related to business you keep five years and you keep them in with the year you claimed. However, any other bill not used for taxes shred. Don't just throw away. If you do just throw them away you can send me your credit card and I will handle the rest (lol).

Important bills and documents have to be retained for as long as your storage space will allow. Because you never know when somebody will send notice of non-payment, even if you have paid them.If you have the documents to prove them wrong, you're safe; otherwise you'll have to pay

For accounting purposes, it is usually kept for at least 5 years. For personal matters, it is kept until such time all these bills are settled and sure they aren't needed anymore and a lifetime for documents that matter most.

IRS 7yrs. If the IRS has any reason to suspect fraud they can go back a far as they want.
I have seen innocent people go into debt to pay for past bank statements. They have no choice.
consider scanning everything to a CD. I have scanned up to 6 legal boxes on 1 disc. That also keeps you receipts from fading.
