Rust, by definition, is the oxidation of certain minerals, mainly metals. That is why your bike was painted. There is a product called " PB Blaster " , sold by Auto Zone Wall Mart etc. that costs about 3 to 4 $ a bottle. Get some, wash the bike, spray the rust, let it sit a bit and spray it again and then wipe clean with paper towels and re-wash. Then re-paint spots that had the rust to prevent it from coming back.

Rust is when metal Oxidizes from water. Would you beleive that water is really a natural solvent? Water cand break anything down over time. If your having a rust problem with your bike you need to sand it down where you have rust and repaint it. This will slow the process.

metal is a general term.... iron will oxidize so iron oxide is rust. steel which is mostly iron will also rust.... copper oxide is the greenish colored stuff on it..... aluminum oxide is a thin coating that slightly dulls it....silver oxide is tarnish and some metals do not oxidize like gold and nickel.... some oxidize slowly or slightly... oxidizing is when the metal is exposed to oxygen and usually a catalyst is involved, such as water. you can get rid of the rust by sanding, a steel brush or steel wool like an sos pad.... then paint it or if it is a moving part that wears, coat it in grease or oil.

There are two main types of material category: metals and non-metals. Under metals, there are also ferrous and non ferrous metals. Non ferrous metals have little or no carbon in them. Most bikes are made from steel, and steel is a ferrous metal so it consists of iron and carbon. Atmospheric attacks on exposed (untreated irons surface, like painting) iron surface causes corossion to occur, which leads to rust in the longterm. I hope this basic info helps.

Boz the OXYGEN present in the air mixes with ferrous in the metal to form FERROUS OXIDE. The physical property of the ferrous oxide and bond structure is weaker, so the rust forms and corrode the surface. The best way to prevent is to apply thin film of cutting oil(used in metal cutting process) or you can go for wax polishing.
