Thomas Jefferson also wrote the Preamble which specifically stated three jobs of our government: protect, provide order, public services. No matter what your opinion of the war is, the war was, in some way, designed to protect our land. I would rather have the war on someone else's soil than our own, wouldn't you? Orders and public services are available to us as best as possible.
So, yeah, people do want a lot from our government because without the support of the government, we wouldn't have to start the Revoluntionary War.

Right off the bat, you have a entire branch (the legislative) of the government that loves to hand out money. Effective Senators and Congressmen (or women) are often seen as 'bringing home the bacon' for their state or district. So you have 100 Senators and 435 Representatives all with their hands in the treasury trying to pull out money for their home state projects. Granted, sometimes the causes are noble. Highways don't get built on their own after all. Often times though, the money is rather wastefully spent.
Meanwhile, you have thousands of people and businesses that want somebody else to foot the bill. These people have figured out how to tap the public treasury for everything they can. And to encourage them, our country is nearing a welfare state such as found in Western Europe. As over 2/3's of the federal budget ar entitlements such as social security and medicare.
Now put the two of them together. You have people holding their hands out and you have the men and women control the purse up for re-election every two (Reps) or six (Senators) years. Of course they want voters and since it's not their money, hey, why not pass it around?

Because our government pushes them into exactly that by giving away our livelihoods to foreign powers and letting nothing remain American. Thomas Jefferson sure blew the doors off Jeanne Dixon a couple of hundred years before she was even a gleam in her daddy's eye.

Totally agree!
Fix the roads, provide for national defense, incarcerate the criminals
Those are about the only things the government SHOULD be involved with

People must work for their living and not to be dependent on the government so that they could not be controlled and exploited by the politicians.

Because our government basically tells us what we are allowed to do and what we arent, so they are kind of like a parent they tell thier children what to do but in return they must provide all the necessites to thier children thats my theory.
