electricity in a battery is created by a chemical reaction. that reaction is continuous whether the battery is being used or not, so sooner or later the battery will die when the chemicals are used up in the battery. I keep my unused batteries in my freezer, while it doesn't stop the reaction, it does slow it down so the batteries last longer in storage

Almost anything will drain when not in use....yes most will...unless you get a long lasting one and spend the extra dollars and depends on what kind of battery.

I don't know if it's true or not but an old teacher of mind once told me that batteries slowly pass electrons from the negative terminal to the positive through the air very slowly. Like I said though I don't know if it's true.

depends... digital cameras and camcorders yes...
rechargeable batteries lose power even if its not in use.
if you leave batteries in stuff then it drains the power.
also if you leave your car sitting without starting it, the battery will drain.
i think thats just about all the batteries i would like to cover.

Lithium batteries hold a charge the longest. NiMH will loss their charge fairly quick regardless if they are in a device or not.
