tina turner private dancer, it was tina's comeback album, proff that after a decade in lounges and dives, a true rock and roll survivor was back to stay. the songs are incredible and (other than 1984) withstand the test of time, what's love got to do with it, private dancer , better be good to me,and lets stay together still get regular airplay 23 years later. the album was re-released in a 20 year anniversary edition and sold a huge amount for a disc most people already have. it also spawned a oscar nominated movie and was the best selling concert tour that year, beating all the big boys every time she's on the road (springstein, the stones, clapton) tina is the best, and every other female singer filling arenas today owe her a debt of gratitude for paving the way.

U2's The Joshua Tree because the sound of that album is so classic it could have just as well been composed today. It doesn't have a lot of the annoying synthesized sounds from the 80s. It's arguable U2's best album, and a band that has been around 25+ years must be doing something right.

my personal favorite album in the 80's was Hysteria by Def Leppard.
I was in fourth grade at the time that I bought it, and we used to jump on my trampoline every afternoon while listening to that tape. My favorite songs were "Pour Some Sugar on Me" and "Animal". The best video was probably "Armageddon It" but I think that's because of Joe Elliot in the fuzzy bear claw slippers.
I'm not really sure that it was particularly musically revolutionary for its time. The music on that album just makes me really happy even now. I found a copy on vinyl recently at a garage sale and bought it along with Slippery When Wet by Bon Jovi, and the first two Poison albums Look What the Cat Dragged In and Open up and Say Ahh....
Hysteria was the first tape that I bought with my own allowance, and was the first rock album that I owned. that's probably why I believe it was the best. it defines my late childhood.

Well, shouldn't you narrow it down by genre? It's way too opinionated to choose what the best album is when everyone likes things differently or genres don't go together. For me it is Seventh Son of a Seventh Son by Iron Maiden

R.E.M.'s "Murmur." It captures the 1980s college rock scene better than any other album, and that is my favorite genre from the decade. It is also very original. I've never heard anything like it, and likely never will again.

The Scorpions Worldwide Live, because it was real rock instead of pop or disco crap, it was loud and it was great.
PS - The Wall isn't from the 80's . . . .

The Joshua Tree by U2 has no weakness at all, and is still topical.
