IMO - It's like when a new model of a vehicle comes out, you don't want to buy it just yet....let other people drive it the first year to work out all the bugs and recalls....then if you're still interested you buy it.

Everyone will have their own opinion but, if you give it some time you'll get a wider variety of opinions.

Go with XP. Vista is not a stable or secure OS right now. As far as compatibility, most software is backwards compatible, meaning that future vista software should work with previous versions of windows (at least a couple of previous versions - don't expect to be able to go back to windows 98). Software is not generally forward compatible. Meaning, you wouldn't expect xp software to work with vista, since when most xp software was being written, vista didn't exist yet.

XP at the moment is almost perfected and Vista is still undergoing (let's say) a "major operation." Unlike XP, Vista still has bugs and yes, it does use up a lot of RAM which is sometimes unnecessary. I'd suggest Windows XP, which is more stable and has little or no bugs to worry about.

would suggest going for xp...
i just got an hp compaq with a vista installed...
its not exactly what is promised and there are lots of bugs in it in areas like networking and printing...
as far as future compatibility of xp is concerned, i'm sure that should not be a problem... example - we still see softwares which can support windows 98, so i'm sure future softwares will be backward compatible with xp even if vista takes over the market...
in case you are concerned with that, you can always take a system which is hardwarewise ready for vista so that you can migrate in future if you really have to...

hope this helps... good luck.

VISTA is truly a very stable Operating System and probably the most stable one that MS has every released but it looks more like Disneyland than it looks like an Operating System. It uses a ridiculously high amount of memory and is not that different in functionality compared to XP. Your best bet is to buy XP Professional Edition with Service Pack 2 & 3.

Good luck.

Background - I have two WinXP desktops and a Vista laptop. Here's my take to-date:

Why go Vista? Cool interface. Improved security (but not by much). It's here, you might as well get on and deal with it. You'll have to buy really robust hardware to run Vista and your other apps will benefit.

Why go WinXP? Stick with WinXP if you want to use a lot of existing software and/or peripherals - you may find that some of them won't play well with Vista. MS has a compatibility routine to test your software and drivers with Vista but don't expect it to be 100% reliable.

What's working for me is a mixed network - with both WinXp and Vista I am learning Vista while using WinXp to run older apps and peripherals that may not work so well with Vista.

Vista is here now. If you can live with it you may as well start learning it now. Anyway, that's the conclusion I drew for my personal situation.

Best of luck ... Gato

I would recomend keeping windows XP SP2 on the machine. Vista Sp1 is going to fix alot of bugs in vista but you only have 512 megs of ram, and thats vista minmum requirements, that mean the system is going to run slow. From what I hear XP runs good with 1 gig of ram and vista runs BEST with 2 gigs of ram.

I'm sitting here posting from a Vista Ultimate computer desperately telling you to avoid vista like the plague.
It won't rip mp3's without popping and scratching from the drm causing problems.
movies sometimes lag because vista is using 100 percent of my core2duo e6700.
it just thrashes the hard drive, and it is slowwwwwwwwwwwww.
Get XP, it's just a more mature operating system..

it's depends on you.

if you feel want to upgrade yourself & able to wait until all the software compatible with Vista then it suits you & if you able to effort to buy pc which support Vista & XP maybe you should buy.

if you feel xp still have a good functioning & compatible with all software then you just stay with xp. if your can't effort just stay with xp.
