Keep in mind that Hurricane season is June 1-Nov 30th. Sept and Oct are the high probability months of a hurricane.

You will not get murdered in the Virgin Islands. Just take the standard precautions like you do at home.

Check out Secret Harbor Beach resort. They have fully equipped kitchens, you can save some money on breakfast and lunch by eating in or packing a lunch for the beach.

I think the food is very good in St Thomas. One our favorite places to eat, Cuzzin's, they serve caribbean food. Our favorite beaches, Megans Bay and Coki Beach. Our favorite drink the Bushwacker. Yummy. The shopping is duty free and in IMHO the best shopping of all the islands. Liquor, jewelry, electronics and cigarettes. But you need to do price comparsion shopping. And never except the first price stated. Walk away, they call you back.

It's a short ferry ride to it's sister island St John and worth the trip to Trunk Bay, the most photographed beach ever. I think they discontinued the ferry to St Croix. Enjoy the USVirgin Islands)

We went to St Thomas and stayed at the sapphire (2005). We had an end unit which was on the beach. Walk out the back door and ---beach. The beach area was small and very rocky. There wee tons of iguanas walking all over (neat) The accomodations were adequate. I would not call them luxury, nor beat down. It is very laid back there. The only problem i had with the sapphire was the location. A lot of people love it b/c it is on the end of the isle and 1.3 miles from red hook (shops, boats, docks, food, groceries, ferrry).
-food at the sapphire--the restaurant is good, $$$
-there is a more family orientated area to the left part of the resort, but we did not venture over there. the beach area was larger and sandier.
*But*, if you dont have a car rental, you must use the local taxis. It is affordable, and they always want a 1.00 tip. The island is very diverse. The end where sapphire is as good, but nothing to do. You must taxi to do everything. The roads are very windy and you really dont want to walk or bike them. There are inner towns (slum city), we never stopped though. Too many freaky people (i call them yellow eyes)--all natives have yellow eyes.
-What stands out? 1. right next door the sapphire is a sail boat (80') that takes you out all day sailing. They serve morning coffee and pastries...lunck snacks. It will take you to some area (valentine bay? heart bay?) and you go snorkling. It was a fun day but bring a sweatshirt, its cold out there. 2. the worlds cheapest and largest jewelry district charlotte amolie (sp?). IIt is a 20 min taxi and bring your cash and haggle to your hearts content. Its the real deal and cheap. loose gems, gold, watches out the @#%!$.
_one day we went to st john and walked down a 1/2 mile street.
**honestly, i would not go back unless we had more than 2 of us and didn't mind sitting and chilling out. If you are looking for a place that you can throw on a backpack and scoot for the day, i would not reccomend this destination.
*there are great views and palms, but i will not return
* ps, we had a real deal 4.2 earthquake at 2am --no lie !

Saphire is currrently in transition......great beach, fair rooms, NO RESTAURANTS so you'll have to taxi or rent a car and go 2 miles down the road to Red Hook where everything you want is available.........and you CAN walk from Sapphire to Red Hook , just dont take rides from strangers.......

Bolongo Bay is good, but a little far away form stuff......you'll be stuck with expensive taxis or a rent a car, and I would NOT walk too far away from the grounds.......

and the comment form the girl on St Croix is interesting, as we on St Thomas think St Croix is just a hair less safe than Baghdad!!

Honestly, I'm from the Virgin Islands (St. Croix). And yes, you do have to be careful not to walk around the Islands by yourself, considering that you are a Tourist. St Thomas is one of the most dangerous Islands you can go to. Yes it's beautiful blah-blah-blah, but has a very high crime rate. If you want to do some site seeing, you need to hire someone to take you around.
Just keeping it real.

RUM RUM RUM... the best rum comes from the islands and everyone loves them...Don;t forget about what happened to Natalie Holloway when you drink too much you may disappear... so do not be foolish and take drinking seriously or you will be in the slammer The law in the caribbean is not like the states, if you do wrong you go to jail no pass forward or take a turn... they mean business so drink senseable and do not overdo this...or you will regret it
