I am from Colorado, and I lived in Denver for two and half years before returning to my small hometown. I'm actually going to soon be moving back to the Denver area, specifically, Castle Rock!
I think that you'll find Denver, specifically the southern suburban area, such as Castle Rock very new, very clean, and to an extent somewhat sprawly. But, the availability of hiking trails, open space, and retail amenities make up for that bedroom community feel.
Denver just finished a multi-multi million dollar mass transporation expansion project which entailed extending their clean, safe light rail system down to Lone Tree, which is about 15 minutes north of Castle Rock. From Lone Tree you can take this train all the way to downtown Denver. Denver is said to be the only US City where all of its sports venues are accessible by train.
The Denver Tech Center, which is in the southern part of the metro area--tends to be pricey to live. You can find better deals in Castle Rock, or even, Lone Tree, or Highlands Ranch. If you're looking for a place to live I want to suggest www.palominopark.com It's a rather affordable, "resort" type apartment complex.
Castle Rock is home to outlet shopping, a really quaint downtown area and relatively quick access to Denver on I-25 however, regardless of the expansion of highway, traffic can still be a pain!
As far as employment. There's two schools of thoughts on that. What I've found is that if you're a professional--it's a very very feirce competitive market. And you have to rise above a lot of other people just to get noticed. There are a lot of "yuppies" there. No offense, if you're one! But, there's a lot of really successful people and it's easy to get a little envious, lol.
But, likewise, if you're not a professional, it seems that you're more ikely to find a good job. There's a lot of jobs for non-professionals, in other words. I think it's because some employers would rather hire people without a fancy schmancy degree so they don't have to pay an immediately high salary, but it turns out to be very decent pay indeed. I get frustrated because I have a Masters degree and yet I do not make as much than several people I know in Denver who just have a high school diploma. A good site to look for jobs in Colorado is http://www.ajb.org/co/
Hope this helps! I'm moving to Castle Rock because I'm in a relationship with someone who works in Denver but I found a job in Springs--so it's good half way point.

I have lived in Colorado all of my life, well except for a year when I was 8, but I have lived in Denver metro since then. Littleton, Co is about 15 miles north of Castle Rock.
Colorado is a great place to live. Castle Rock is in Douglas County, so sometimes the assessor makes property tax slightly higher and depending on where you buy your house traffic could really suck.
Schools in Colorado usually rank pretty high nationally, but that is not saying much since most kids that graduate can't read or do math. Crime is pretty low and the weather is great, as long as you don't mind snow anytime of year.
The good thing is snow one day and sun the next. It might be worth moving.

I'm a fifth generation Colorado native. And I live in the Denver Metro Area (but the next neighborhood over is within Denver city limits.) I absolutely love living here! Today I spend the afternoon kayaking. Watching the sand pipers along the shores, and ducks and geese out on the water, with wild flowers and clear mountain refections! The park's just minutes from my house. What more could you ask for? Lodo (Lower Downtown Denver) is awesome to hang out in, with shops & art galleries and restaraunts & clubs. Whatever you want. And all over Denver there are great tiny neighborhoods you could spend the day in. It's the best city in the world, and I couldn't imagine living anywhere else!

Colorado is a great place to live, its very calm not like NY or LA, there are many nice people very few rude people or anything, the City of Denver is the biggest city in the surrounding states but is not that crowded but still a great place to live or enjoy, houses are more expensive yes but you wont likely be bored here, theres snowboarding for kids, skiing for everyone, mountains to hike in the summer, concerts at Redrocks to love with the scenery and just a wonderful place, the weather is crazy sometimes but never is a big damper, just this last year has had a bit more odd weather than usual but the weather is not bad, families love to move here to escape big city life or seacoast life and take in calm and mountaineous life :-)

I live in Castle Rock, moved here in 1991. Raised 2 children here. Love it, great town , friendly people, good schools and churches. Don't know what type of jobs you're looking for but, there are lots or retail stores ie. the outlet mall, we're 15 min. south of the tech center and about 30-40 min south of Denver.
