My son broke his leg last week, and had to have an x-ray done. The radiologist asked if I were pregnant, and I said no, because I didn't think I was. Today, I found out I am indeed pregnant.

I'm concerned that being in the room at the time of the x-ray may have some sort of harmful effect on my unborn child. They gave me a lead vest/apron to protect me from any radiation, so does this mean my baby is not at risk? I'm only a month along.

Thanks in advance!

I am an x-ray tech (I take the x-rays).. and I promise you that you are just fine. We x-ray pregnant women all the time. The risk is very very very minimal (even if the xray was on you) and if you had your lead apron on, then you are perfectly safe!

Honey, you're fine! I had an x-ray when I was 8 weeks pregnant - car accident - the baby was fine. In addition, I had major x-rays when I was 7 months pregnant with my second daughter - I had type A flu & had a chest x-ray & full-blown CT scan. It was scary & I had to sign things saying, "yes, I'm pregnant, but I still need a big dose of radiation." I was so worried the baby would be harmed. Both babies were fine & doing well 5 and 3 years later!

Just relax dear lady.. everything is fine.. I am glad that your radiologist had taken necessary precaution and there should not be any fears in your mind about it.. protection measures used properly take care of all the best way..
Do not keep worrying about it anymore.. whatever goes on in the mind of pregnant mothers.. have often proved to be effecting the child.. so try to keep your mind free from any tensions.. worries.. fears.. and be positive on thinking.. be sure your family doctor will be really concerned about all such things.. Wish you all the best.. you and your baby are safe enough.. so relax..

I would say that since you are not that far along and you wore the vest you should be OK!! Good luck with your sons broken leg, I hope it heals quick and congratulations on your discovery of having a little one in the next 8 months or so

you should be fine. my oldest daughter had to have a chest xray when I was pregnant with my 2nd but didn't know and my 2nd baby is fine. And when I was pregnant with my 3rd, I broke my foot and all they did was give me an extra vest to put on during the xrays. Actually, now that I think about, I've been exposed to xrays during all 3 of my pregnancies for various reasons. you'll be fine.

Sweets, you are fine. They are tough little booger at that age and can withsatnd a whole lot stuff. Since you wore the vest, that just added the protection. Best of luck with baby and broken leg.

I am a future X-ray Technicion. There shouldn't be damage. the reason why they ask is because they want to minimalize the amount of radiation because the baby is so small. radiation can cause damage if taken in large doses. it effects your thyroid glands.

No you should be ok... I had to get one done while i was preggo... They just say that *just in case* anything happens(law suits)... to my knowledge there is nothing scientifically proven that it will hurt a baby when it comes to xrays
