An argument in opposition to another.

A counter argument is like a rebuttal. When one person makes a statement, and another replies to it pointing out any inconsistency or logic error or untruth in the statement, the reply would be a sort of counter argument to the first one. Here, the word counter is used in the sense of its being an opposition to the first argument.

Betty and Jane are arguing.
Jane: I like baseball, it is lots of fun.
Betty: Why do you think baseball is fun?
Jane: Because it is exciting when people hit home runs.
Betty: Yes, but players do not hit home runs very often. There is lots of waiting for players to hit the ball. It is very boring.
Betty has made a counter argument (players do not hit home runs very often) to Jane's argument (baseball is fun) by exposing a flaw in that argument.
