Prince Philip is not the offspring of the previous monarch, and thus not entitled to serve as monarch ahead of Elizabeth, the true heir. He had been a Prince of Denmark and Greece until he renounced his claim there to marry Elizabeth. At that time King George VI gave him the titles Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth, and Baron Greenwich, of Greenwich in the County of London. Regardless of his wife's accention to the throne, no change of his noble status, up or down, could be accomplished without the approval of Parlament. It was years later and after much wrangling, back-and-forthing, and agonizing over the propriety of it all (and effort on the part of Elizabeth) that Philip was granted the title His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

But if he really, really wants to be king, all he has to do is see to the "untimely passing away" of 467 certain other members of the royal family, thanks to the fact of his being the grat-reat-grandson of Princess Alice.

Because if Prince Phillip was made king he would be of higher rank than Elizabeth. The crown goes to the eldest child not the husband. Ex. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

In the British monarchy, the husband of a female monarch does not have any recognized special status, rank, or privileges. In actual fact Prince Philip does play a major role in royal affairs, but this is not recognized in terms of his title. Interestingly enough, the wife of a male monarch (e.g. the Queen Mother was the wife of King George VI) takes on her husband's rank and style upon marrying, becoming Queen.

The last King Consort was Philip of Spain who was married to Mary I. Mary insisted that he be given the title "King". He wanted to be King Regnant but that was not allowed although Mary would have been happy with it.. Since then Mary II's husband was King Regnant as William III but no other husbands of Queens Regnant have had the title. Victoria wanted Albert crowned King but Parliament would not allow it.

He's British royalty by Marriage. In fact, Prince Charles outranks his father in terms of number of titles. Prince Philip is from Greek royalty. He had to renounce his Greek citizenship when he married the then Princess Elizabeth in Nov 0f 1947. At the time of their marriage, he was given the title of Duke of Edinburgh among others. Though Greece is a republic now, at one time there was a royal family. In fact King Constitine of Greece and Queen Sophia of Spain are also from the Greek Royal house. They are brother and sister {Queen Sophia is married to King Juan Carlos of Spain, her brother is married to Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark. Who is the youngest sister to the Queen of Denmark). Prince Philip was the last royal child born in Greece before the final coup that finally dissolved the royal household in the 1920's. His mother was a Princess of Denmark, he can trace his ancestory back to both Queen Victoria and King Christian IX of Denmark. All royal houses in Europe with the exception of the House of Monaco and Liechtenstein can trace their ancestory back to Victoria and Christian IX.

Prince Albert's title was Prince Consort, and Victoria had to argue for quite a while with Parliament, even to get him that title.

he could have been king consort, which was the title given to prince Albert by queen Victoria, but he can't automatically become a king as he would then outrank the rightful heir who was Elizabeth

In the hierarcy a King is higher than a Queen. So if he would have become King he would have more power than her. That is why he is called Prince.

His official title would have been King Consort. It is a title that must be approved by Parliament, and nobody ever asked for him to be named King.
