If y varies directly as x, then y = k*x, where k is the constant of variation.

In order to find the value of y that you want, you need an x value and k. Fortunately, you have a pair of related values, x = 18 and y = 36.

So, 36 = k* 18, and therefore, k = 2.

So, when x = 20, y = k*x = 2*20 = 40.

Directly proportional means they increase (or decrease) at the same rate.

y is twice the size of x

so if x is 20, y would be

40.

You can also set up a proportion:

y x
---- = ------
36 18

So 18y = 36x
or y = 2x

Then you can substitute in your x value:
y = 2(20)
y = 40

y = k x
36 = 18 k
k = 2
y = 2 x 20
y = 40

well 36 is 2 times 18

so y = 2x

if x is 20

y is 2 times 20

or 40

find the ratio between y and x

36 / 18 = 2

therefore y = 2x
x = 20, y must = 40
