My friend and I took the back panel off of his laptop to see how much memory he had, and the memory stick says "512 MB" right on it. However, when the system boots, it only says 384MB. What's the problem here? Is the memory bad?

Please, only answer if you are sure of what you're saying.

Yaa thats correct it shows 384 because 128 is reserved for dispaly card ( i.e your graphics card..) so 128+384 = 512..
so memory is good..

When the system boots the memory reading it's giving you is the one that takes into account the memory the Windows is using thus the lower reading. Goto http://www.crucial.com and they have a scan that will tell you exactly what you have on your computer.

all computers use some of the memory for internal use and windows, so what you see is what is free.. if you look at you desktop system you'll see the same thing...
