i believe that their prices will drop, and that they wont be number 1 any more but they will keep producing of course. unless they eventually go bankrupt, and loose everything. but i doubt that's going to happen.

Technically, it is just for one quarter that GM isn't number 1 right now. If that continues to happen, hopefully the decision-makers will start listening to the consumer and giving us what we want, not what they think we want. Personally, I think Toyota is way overrated. Sure, back in the day they built bullet-proof vehicles, but lately their quality is really lacking. Then there is the whole business about them not having recalls when they should and all that jazz. They are trying too hard to be #1 and GM is trying too hard to...do something that I don't really understand. Americans need to wake up and realize that buying foreign vehicles, selling businesses to foreign buyers, and moving labor out of the country is a VERY bad thing. Let everyone else have control of what WE need, and we will eventually be screwed.

In the mean time nothing will happen. I'll continue to run my 87 caddy & my 95 cavalier into the ground. The people that always drive GM will still do so & the people that drive Toyotas will keep running their mouth about how their car is soo much better. In the long run I say if America was able to put man on the moon then dethroning toyota & ending the war on Terror should be easy. The problem will take care of itself!

nothing bad will happen... cause theres actually good things that can come out of it
for one thing, toyota right now is kinda like a halo company... everyone is amazed at how high quality toyota is and how environmentally friendly they are... in reality, the quality of GM cars is comprable to that of Toyota... and Toyota makes giant gas guzzling SUVs and Trucks, some of which get less MPG than their American counterparts.. plus people are starting to realize that all these amazing hybrids arent actually delivering the factory MPG ratings, and in fact often times arent saving enough gas to counterbalance the huge premium you pay for the technology... hybrids arent the answer, theyre just a stepping stone... Toyota being number one just puts them more in the spotlight and they'll have to answer for their shortcomings just like GM has had to....
and the main reason American auto makers are losing market share is because they're cost structure is just too high... this comes from the high legacy costs... the pensions and retirement money they have to pay for all their retired employees... not to mention the hourly wages that the u.s. auto workers get (which are about 60% higher than other similar manufacturing jobs)... all of this means that the average American car is about $3000 more than it otherwise would be (and saving that much money would put it right at a competitive level with japanese cars)... this all stems from the United Autoworkers Union negotiating all of this back when the U.S. automakers weren't worried about foreign competition... with GM losing the number one spot we can only hope that workers will be willing to switch to more reasonable retirement plans and pay packages in order to keep their company afloat....
just hope people dont dump their GM stocks

Nothing happened when Toyota surpassed them this year. Now the target is on Toyota's back and they need to worry about who will take the lead from them. They need to take a serious long-term look at Hyundai - they are building some seriously nice cars, with the longest warranty in the world. They have models that compete with Toyota now - stealing customers and they'll have models soon which will compete against the Lexus brand.
GM can now also take a breather and design some cars which will start to give Toyota a run for the money as well.

not much, but some folks will have to swallow their pride and wonder about the future of the company. Instead of focusing on the sales numbers, GM will focus on improving profit margins, expanding in weak markets, and remaking its image through market research and marketing. GM in North America will invest more on research on alternative fuels and battery technologies, and market research with regards to smaller cars and crossovers. GM and Toyota will continue to be the unit sales leaders for a while. That won't change. Only the order can change. Competition is healthy as it begets innovation and quality.

i own a shop and nothing really ,it has happened before ,and I'm sure it will happen a few more times also, but all it will do is put them in 2nd place in the car and truck market, but that's bad considering they cant even be no-1 in their own country ,it doesn't say to much for technology right now,but if they loose it they will get it back, good luck, hope this helps.,,ps its not lost yet for all the year, there's still a chance for them.

It's a crying shame. I guess it will give the American haters one more thing to cheer about. Maybe it will wake up their consciences and they'll realign their allegiances.

They'll be number 2!
Maybe they'll try harder.
I thought Toyota already overtook them.
