It's because of the structure of the building and all the electrical interferences inside the building as well. Once you get out of the building your phone probably goes back to normal. Besides that Sprint sucks too, I have them and they are the worst company to deal with.

That is one of the more common complaints by Sprint users. I have a tired old Motorola and use T mobile and have never gone in to roam. The difference has to do with Sprints tower locations and the frequencies they use. Also my service uses satellites and not towers, so I could be in the middle of the ocean on an island and still be under the umbrella of any of the four birds I go through. I have sat in the local flee market, under lots of concrete and steel and been able to use my phone when people around me have to go out front to use theirs.

Find out who of your friends does not get roaming inside the same buildings, and switch to their service. That is easiest.
I had luck also replacing the phone with a different model, but that is less certain.

The reason why is because you are using a roaming partners towers. Anytime you are off of the tower programmed into your phone it will show roam, digital roam, or analog roam. Your phone should have a roaming indicator(triangle or R) to let you know if you are roaming, or covered.

Switch to another provider, ask them for a free trial. Then let sprint know why you're cancelling after your contractual period to avoid cancellation fees.
