I'm sure it hurts like heck! But pencils don't have lead in them...the stuff is graphite. You won't get lead poisoning, but you might get an infection if you didn't clean the wound well after the injury.

If you haven't had a tetanus shot in the past 10 years, you're due for one anyway.

Ok I assume you didn't do that on purpose, because that would be bad :) You probably don't need to worry if the lead is just under the skin, although if it's really deep you should see a doctor about it. I have a little piece of pencil lead under the skin in my hand that's been there for 27 years. It doesn't effect me at all, but will probably never go away. My dad has one in his forehead!

It's probably graphite and not a lead pencil, so you should be ok. If you see a red streak creeping up your arm in a path towards your heart, that's the lead poisoning headed there.

Pencils have not been made with lead for around forty or forty-five years. They now use graphite, which is no problem, but the use of the word "lead" has stuck. So we don't say "I stuck myself with a pencil graphite." We say, "I stuck myself with a pencil lead." Oh, well.

I think you will be safe. Just keep the area clean to avoid infection.
