I just asked my mom the same question. I am due 7/21 and just now packing a bag. Everything needed for the baby you can get from the hospital. unless you plan on having a special coming home outfit then you don't have to really bring much. Most hospitals provide you with a few things to get you started. If you register on line for the enfamil diaper bag they can give you that at the hospital and its filled with stuff. The hospital has diapers and wipes in your room for baby (take them home with you) some give you formula and bottles, or the bottled with premade formula. Receiving blankets and are also available for you to take. So when packing its more so your things. Keep it simple. Sweats and a t shirt or comfy lounge wear to go home in. You get a gown when u get there. Flip flops work as slippers and shoes 2 go home in. U may want to bring your own soap and shampoo although they have it there for you. Underwear (bra and panties). Bring a camera if you plan on taking pics of the baby. People make the whole packing thing far worse than it should be. One important thing is the car seat. The won't let you take the baby out of the hospital w/o one. Good luck
