loneliness and solitude may be linked to one another, but in fact,it is two different state of mind.a lonely person is being sad 'cause he or she lacks friends or company, but a solitary person doesn't feel this way 'cause he or she enjoys spending time alone and doesn't need to be around people all the time to feel happy or to have fun.

Ok, here's a quotation for you...

"Our language has widely sensed the two sides of being alone. It has created the word "loneliness" to express the pain of being alone. And it has created the word "solitude" to express the glory of being alone."

Loneliness is a bad thing and can be suffered even though you are surrounded by lots of people, both strangers and friends. It is an emotion. Solitude is being alone and one with yourself. Solitude is usually chosen when the world around you is too chaotic and you need time to re-up your emotional strength. It is a state of being rather than an emotion.
