I have allergies, tested and confirmed and asthma. I get about three colds a year and 2-3 asthma related flare ups including a sinus infection that has taken me three weeks to get over and two rounds of antibiodits. I work in a dr. office so I am exposed to tons of germs. My boss said something today that upset me. He asked if I was feeling better and I said mostly just some congestion still but thanks. He said sarcastically, you know you don't have to always be sick." I am not always sick and I was only out sick one day this year! I think highly of my boss but I don't complain constantly, I may have a minor issue once every 2-3 months but nothing that affects my work performance. Should I have been hurt by this? Am I a hypocondriac?

He's a jackass and is obviously trying to make you feel bad. You can't help it if you're sick. I remember when I was a little kid, I always had to pee all the time, and my family tried to make me feel bad about it. Turns out I had a urinary tract problem. Don't be offended, some people just are jerks.

I'd like to know why he said what he did. Not being accusatory here, but are you absolutely sure you don't complain more than you think you do? Sometimes we say things in passing and don't realize how often we're saying them, or don't realize that the tone in our voice is one of complaining.

If you know you haven't been bringing attention to yourself by complaining about your illnesses, then try not to take what he said personally. He may have been trying to make a joke, not realizing how he was coming across to you. Sounds like he may need a lesson in tact or humor. You're performing your job well and consistently, and haven't abused your sick days. That's all that really matters.

Hey Princess...:)

You being aware of your allergies and your conditions does not mean that you are a hypocondriac...

At the same time, you should also not be sensitive to people's remarks...

I think it would be easier, if next time you are asked, just say that you are doing very well or fine... without expalkining how you actually are.

I believe that being unwell is very personal, most people don't relate to ouw condtion anyway...:)

You take care...

sounds like you may have gotten a little information on how you are being perceived by your boss...if you seem to talk often of ailments even though they haven't interrupted your ability to be at work and to tend to your responsibilities, there is such a thing as a "poor me" drama that people sometimes run as a way of seeking attention or making excuses...maybe it's something to think about...i think Norman V. Peale said, "The most important decision we make each morning when we wake up is how we are going to feel." we can choose to feel bitter or better is another one i've heard...food for thought?

Seeing as that you are pre-disposed to being sensitive to airborne illness, I would reccomend getting another job.
Barring that, just tough it out. The world is a rough place, even in a doctor's office. Doctors have been known to cultivate superiority complexes. Slip an *** load of viagra in his coffee one day, see what develops. Take pictures.

You are too sensitive, that's for sure
You shouldn't have to ask if you should be hurt by something
if it hurt you, then it did, if it didn't, then it didn't.
