In humans, there are half the number of chromosones in sex cells than in somatic (body) cells.

This means that while body cells have 2 copies of each of the 23 unique human chromosomes, making a total 46 chromosones, while sex cells only have 1 copy of each, thus 23 chromosomes.

However, the chromosomes content is the same in sex cells as in somatic cells.

Sex cells have half the number of chromosomes that body cells have. That way, when two sex cells or gametes join, the zygote has the right amount of chromosomes.
