Why was art and the church so important in medieval Europe?

Art was a form of communication, drawings were everywhere,in the market place on buildings sometimes it's all they had to find out what was going on. Now the church was law,if you did anything against or just talked about the Church they would either torture you or have you killed.The church was a very evil place.
