I know this is not a popular position but I liked the voice over because it was so reminiscent of the "film noir" style. The movie--with or without the v.o. is still one of the best made in the genre. I dust it off a couple of times a year; and as I get older Rutger Hauer's closing speech--short though it may be--rings more poignant with each passing year. And I thought Dekkard's comment (in v.o.) that at the end Roy Baty loved life so much--"even my life"--that he couldn't allow Dekkard to fall from that building, well, that just makes me pause and reflect each time.

Man, that's a good question. I see "Alien" in the list, but I think the sequel, "Aliens" -- is better. Then again, I might call "Aliens" the best action movie ever, too. Not sure if it's sci-fi or action. Pure sci-fi gems: + 2001 Space Odyssey (Stanley Kubrick) + Blade Runner (??) + Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Spielberg) + Planet of the Apes [the original] (??) Sci-Fi / Action: + Anything by James Cameron (The Abyss, Terminator, Aliens, Terminator 2) + Star Wars Episode 5: Empire Strikes Back + The Matrix + The Thing

I liked the movie, and have the director's cut on DVD.

However, my Mom has read the book upon which the movie was supposed to be based, and said the movie was nothing like it.

In the original book, blade runners were doctors that operated outside the bureaucratic red tape, and were therefor paid in cash and such. Sort of an interesting commentary about how our medical system is getting so gummed down between big hospitals, big insurance companies, and government involvement.

Agree with the dude about the narration; definitely added something to the tone of the film and I was not happy when I bought the DVD and it was missing!

As for the hints about Ford's character being a replicant; the hints were there in the original theatrical version as well...I recall discussing this with my high school buds when we saw it in the theatre for original release.

...I personally preferred the original theatrical version of "Blade Runner" (1982), with Harrison's narration; despite the futuristic, albeit gritty time period depicted in the film, the voice-over narration gave the film a distinct film noir feel to it, not unlike the classic 'gumshoe' detective movies of the '30's and '40's.

Although I very much appreciated the implied notion that Harrison's character might just be a replicant himself, as indicated in the special director's cut of the film, the extra snippets of storyline, as well as the added graphic violence really didn't add to, or enhance the film in any way.

I've watched 'Blade Runner' several times at the theatres when it first came out and then probally more than 30 times on video and then even more on dvd. The 'narration' slightly got on my nerves and I always wished I could take it out. Then, of course, on dvd I finally got the chance to watch it without the narration. Now, the narration doesn't get on my nerves any...lol It's so much better with the cheesy narration and adds to the 30s/40s scenery. :-)

Excellent film. Harrison and Rutger Hauer were at the top of their games in it.
