Yes the US did pay Nexico for these lands. It was part of Treaty of Guadelupe Hidalgo and it's known as the "mexican cession". However, bear in mind that the amount given to the Mexicans was half of what was offered before the war and was basically not much of an offer (an offer from the barrel of a pointed gun, to use the old phrase). Furthermore it came to a few pennies per acre.

So the answer is true they "paid" for the land, but only in the sense of a mafia don who "paid" for a store after he asks the small storeowner to buy his store for half its real worth...while a gang of thugs stands behind him waiting for your answer.

False. Most of these lands were acquired through military action. One of the rare exceptions is the area known as the "Gadsden Purchase".
