About one month ago I handed three letters to the mailman (power bill, water bill, and credit card bill). He was standing at the mailbox filling everyone else's mail and said he would take mine, so I handed the letters to him. Well yesterday I get a notice from the power company saying they are shutting my power off. Then today I find out my c.c. is past due. I put two and two together and remembered that I handed the letters to him. I don't know what he did w/ them, but my bills never got paid. Tomorrow, I probably won't have water too. I have never paid late on any of my bills, so hopefully my credit won't be affected. What kind of recourse do I have for this (if any)?

You better explain to the company your mail is lost and seperately lodge a complaint with the post company regarding the lost mail and try to prove with evidence you really post it. I do not think u will be affected,

The mail service where I live is terrible. My mail is constantly lost. But it is much better than it used to be. Back then, I complained to his boss, his boss's boss, etc. etc. The mailman told me if I didn't let up I would never get my mail. Finally the jerk retired. I have two checks out there somewhere and had to pay late fees etc. What a mess. I have started paying online and just recently signed up for bill pay-free- through my bank. They will send the checks or electronically send payments. I have the confirmation number and no hassle. . .and don't buy those expensive stamps anymore. I get email notices that the bills are due. So if the bill doesn't get here. . .oh well. . .

Ask your bank if the companies have cashed your checks yet. If they have you can get copies of the checks from your bank and send them to those companies.

Was payment crossed in the mail? (Another bill sent to you the same day you gave the payment to your mailman?) If that happend you can usually disregard the bill, but call the company first. They can tell you if this was the case.

Final resort -- contact your local postmaster. He's the head of all the post offices in your area. You would have to prove you wrote the checks (carbon copy if your checkbook allows those or a copy of your checking log).
