It depends.

If you don't know there is a brick on top of a door and you open the door, yes, you will get hurt when the brick comes smashing down on your head.

However, here's an example of what the phrase really means:

Someone says something really mean about you to a friend. The friend never tells you. You're feelings don't get hurt because you never knew it was said about you.

Not necessarily. In a way, you are a bit safer off not knowing, because dangerous things related to this certain knowledge may come to you BECAUSE you find out.
For example, there's a famous French noble that always wore a mask and had the king's trusted officials trailing behind him. We know for a fact that this French noble found out a dark secret about the king, and his punishment was to be monitered for life.
On the other hand, if you didn't know that I'm holding a sharp knife to your throat and had the intent of decapitate you, then you would have lost a big chance of escape.

Yes! If i dont find my boyfriend 'cheating' then it wont break my heart!

I may look like an idiot in front of those who know about the 'affair' or 'cheating' but if i dont know about it i wont have to deal with the pain but like someone else metioned above, eventually it will catch up to you and it will then hurt you!

Nope. If you didn't know a car was coming up around the next corner so fast that it was going to slam into your car, it would still hurt you when it happened, right?

I guess that all depends on how you look at it... if it were lies and you did not know that someone was telling you lies, would it bother you, NO!

If you were paralized from the waist down and someone cut your leg and hit a major artery, leaving you bleeding profusely and you had no clue, yes it could hurt you, even worse, it could kill you!!!

I do not agree with that...
If there are a bunch of people looking to sabotage my job and I don't know it. But they mess stuff up to make me look bad. Yes, that could hurt me- even tho I do not know it is happening.

That is very false. In many cases....you lose advantage when you don't know. Sometimes you are better off knowing and hurting....then to not know and hurt forever because of it.
