I have a 1973 Vega Gt that I love. But i want to get a little bit better gas mileage. A friend told me that if you change your gears youll get better gas mileage, he did it on his lifted truck and gets nearly 24 MPG. Any info on how or what i need to do is welcome. You go with a higher ratio on the rear end, doing a tune up can help as well as checking the brakes and be sure they are not hanging or sticking. Check wheelbearings.

look in the book to find the rpm you have the most torque then look at the rpm you have the most hp
that is when the engine is the most efficient then choose a gear ratio that allows you to maintain that rpm at
60 to 70 miles per hour
that will get you the best mileage
if it is already there a gear change won,t help you much

you need to change your rear end to a gear ratio that causes lower rpms at higher speeds. this will take away from your initial take off power but will increase your gas mileage

i own a shop and i don't know what the Vega came with ,but i used to own one of them if it has a 3.55 gear in it and you go to a 3.23 this will help the mileage,i just used this as an example though, but once you find out what gear it has lower the number the more mileage it will get, good luck with it hope this helps.

well let us start out a 3.50:1 is the midline for torque and fuel economy, a 2.55:1 is better fuel economy, and a 4.11:1 is just a torquey little bugger. just remember to change aut the speedometer drive gear when you get done.
