The tail parts could be dying due to the injury, or it may have developed fin rot. If the edges like white and nasty, it would probably be fin rot. That's a bacterial infection that would need to be treated with an antibiotic. For that I would suggest Maracyn or Furan, either one will get the job done, just follow the directions on the box carefully.

Your fish tail is injured as a result of either (in order of frequency): tail rot, damaged fins from other fishes, or malnutrition. It's best to increase the heat to help its metabolism and recovery rate, but you must feed it often if you do so. If the fins are damaged from another fish, you might want to set up different niches (living space) so that each fish has its own space and won't invade that of another. For diseases, medicine bought or cleaning the water would help. These are only tips, and might not stop the fin damage, but will help you.

The fish has fin and tail rot
Do a large water change (50%) then treat it with tetracyline and follow the directions carefully. It is curable if you catch it in time and closely follow the directions provided on the tetracycline package. Best of luck.
