I am in my first semester of college and already I am burned out. I know what my goals are and what career field I want to go into but getting there is getting very tiring for me. I am very unmotivated and don't know what to do. I want to become a doctor but right at this moment I don't know if I can make it. What should I do?

Hopefully there's a counseling center on campus. Call them or drop by to make an appointment and tell them you're interested in being screened for depression. If they can't screen you themselves, hopefully they can refer you to someone else.

A link you may want to visit in the meantime is

I also began to lose motivation when I was in college and I wish I'd known more about depression when I did.

Take care and good luck.

You have to keep going with your studies if you want to become a doctor-- the last thing to be thinking about doing is dropping out or giving up. Even if you're willing to settle for a job easier to get than a doctor, you're still going to have to work for it. That being said, you might as well keep working towards a goal you want to achieve, i.e., becoming a doctor.

Everyone feels stressed out by all the work they have. There's always so much to do and never enough time to do it. We know that if we only had the time, we could spend enough time on all of our work to make it the best it could be, but we just don't have that luxury. It's important to just get the work done, even if it isn't the best you can make it. So just keep taking those test, writing those papers, and doing whatever it is you have to do to earn your major. Once that's over with, you'll finally be able to go to med school and ground yourself even further on your path to becoming a doctor.

Take a weekend off and booze it up. That's what the rest of us college kids do!

Becoming a doctor (I assume M.D) is probably one of the hardest things a person can do in college. The pre-med kids are notorious for being total douchebags. Every low-level life science class I took was filled with pre-meds arguing about how they got an A- on the test and how they studied for something more than someone else did. YYYUUCCCKKK. I'm so glad it's over for me. Then again, I will be in med school next year for my Ph.D, so maybe I'll just get stuck with more of the same.

Maybe set goals for yourself. I'm a senior in high school, and I'm pretty much burned out. So I have count downs to things that I'm looking forward to, like the end of AP week, prom, graduation, my trip this summer, etc. And in between, I make sure that I'm doing productive things like studying intensely so that I feel really good about myself when the day comes. Plus, you get a lot of sympathy when you tell someone that you've been working for hours straight and got next-to-no sleep.

Try doing community service. If you want to be a doctor, it'll look really good to med schools, and it's a more interesting way to reach your goal (don't do something boring, like paperwork.... go to a hospital or something, b/c it's more hands on and fun). Good luck!
