Many environmentalists disagree with the principle of carbon offsets. George Monbiot, an English environmentalist and writer, has compared carbon offsets to the practice of purchasing Indulgences during the Middle Ages, whereby people with money could purchase forgiveness for their sins (instead of actually repenting and not sinning anymore). Monbiot also says that carbon offsets are an excuse for business as usual with regards to pollution.

I absolutely love it.Only the libs could come up with one better than Mr.Ponzi.I'm in the process of setting up a Cayman Island Corp. to sell carbon credits to the Hollywood lib crowd that want to ease their guilt. My company will plant 100 trees in the Amazon for every $100,000- that will give the same amount in carbon offsets. What a superb deal.Stay tuned for the details! Old P.T must be spinning in his grave, remember he is the one that said there is a sucker born every minute.Al Gore knows!

Carbon offset credits are a great idea, if done properly.

Lets say we set a limit for energy use for various businesses.

Company A has energy needs over the limit but cannot lower their energy use because of lack of suitable technology.

Company B is already at the specified limit. They could become more efficient but cannot afford to do so.

Company A pays company B for a carbon offset. Company B uses that money to invest in new technolgy to lower its energy use way below their required limit.

Net result is the same as if both companies were at the specified limit.

Great free-market solution to polution. (Hey, that rhymes!)

Carbon offset credits are absurd. I predict that should neolibs control more of the federal government, a new tax to compensate for each citizen's carbon footprint will be levied. That money will certainly fund yet another social program, one not at all connected to global warming.

BTW, weren't Indulgences somewhat responsible for the reformation?

No. It's the biggest BUNKO SCAM to ever hit the american public.

Edit: for Informat: Question for you.

Have you ever started, owned and built a company?? Well I have. A half dozen of them. And you're going to tell me how much electricity I can use. Two examples of a business:

(1) Started a company from ground up with me as only employee. Company went from 1 employee to over 300 in less than 3 years. Now just how in the hell are you going to figure how much BUNKO money I'm going to pay company "B"?

(2) Started second business and that company went from me as only employee to over 500 employees in 3 years. Lots of electrical equipment and machinery. Now just in hell gets to "set my limit for energy use? You? My competition? The Federal Government? A Blue Ribbon Panel? Or a damned Liberal that has no idea of how to run a company or business?

If and which you are...buying into the Carbon Offset Credits...It's the biggest BUNKO SCAM TO EVER HIT AMERICA!!! Give me a break and keep out of my Business!!!

Not so fast! I think it is the best idea to come around since brit shaved her head! But it just has not been taken far enough. You gotta visualize the possibilities:

Jerk offset credits- I can be as big a jerk as I want without offending anyone. Just as long as I keep paying.

Bad driving offset- fender bender? Don't sweat it officer! I am still good on credit! See? See?

Offsets are just the wealthy environmentalists way of telling you how to live and then buying off their own irresponsibility.

I think having a baby and then putting it in day care, given that this causes horrific emotional damage, plus social, intellectual, and physical damage, is much more ridiculous than carbon offset credits.

YES--the people running the propaganda lobbying for this system, (Al Gore) owning the brokerage companies dealing in them. On Wall Street this would be called terrible things like "racketeering" and "insider trading" if applied to other industries/markets.

Try this on for ridiculous. In N. Carolina a convicted criminal can donate a kidney and other live donor transplant items. For that "gift", they will get x many years deducted from their prison sentence.
