all I ever see anymore are blood and guts slasher movies, but they have no action, suspence or edge of your seat moments, like the ones I used to love,

I know what you mean!

I hate it that Hollywood relies on blood and guts to make a "scary" film. They are so predictable, usually completely stupid, and not scary at all!

The truly good horror films are far and few between.

I really love "28 Days Later". The "zombies" themselves aren't the scary part; it's how people treat each other when faced with a crisis of this scale. Man is the scariest monster of all!

I also think "Signs" was a great horror movie.

I was totally creeped out by the way the aliens were presented and I loved the fact that we never saw the invasion or the aftermath of it. I think what you can imagine is far scarier than anything a Hollywood director can show you!

Couple of different reasons. Some studios/directors think that horror is only about either 1) startle moments, like dropping the incidental music and having no on screen noise, then have something jump out on screen, or a loud noise, etc. or 2) repulsive moments, when you go for the gore and the squemish audience people close their eyes, hide, etc.

Studios also don't tend to view a horror movie as being "serious" or "quality" material. It seems that many just want to slap a horror film together- basic plot, actors, the above elements, and film it. They don't spend a lot to make the movie, thus they don't have to get a ton of box office sales to make money... especially knowing there are hardcore people out there that will see anything horror.

When you do all that, you don't get a well thought out and executed plot. If you are a horror movie fan, you likely have seen all the basic plot premises, and the variations that people have done with them. A basic plot, and basic twists aren't gonna do it for the horror "conisseuer" that wants a movie that requires you to pay attention to the plot and actually have twists and an ending that hasn't been done before, or that wasn't easy to predict. I know for me it's rare that a movie can surprise me with an unexpected ending.

Then you need someone with vision that wants to create that suspenseful atmosphere and mood... the horror comes from identifying with the characters and feeling as if you were in the same situation and environment. A lot of that comes from cinematography, set design, etc.

Guess people were bored by the old movies. Horror in the mind is much worse than on the screen. Dont know why we became so into the slasher stuff but the old way doesnt sell anymore.
