and you are listed as dependent, do your parents have to go into the court to get a public defender?

You are legally an adult. You don't even have to tell your parents of your arrest. However, an arrest is considered public information. If you want an attorney and cannot afford one, you can request one. If you don't qualify for a public defender, there are usually new attorneys trying to build their business. The judge can assign you as a client (depending upon the city you live in).. I would suggest an attorney depending upon the charge. Some charges can have an adverse affect on your career choice.

The only time your parents will be held responsible for your mistakes is if they prove to be an incompetent party in the matter. An example would be a child missing too many days at school. If you are charged with a crime, they probably won't need to get involved since you are 18. That makes you an adult.

Can you be more specific about the arresting charge?

At 18 you are already in the age of majority and your parents need not go to court to answer in your behalf. You will be held responsible for your acts under the law.
