At its time, it was revolutionary.
The colorization was amazing, and very expensive. The special effects were brand new and very well done for its time.
The songs were timeless. Using all the Little People as Munchkins was also a first.

Good luck on your paper!

The movie came out in 1939. The only other color movie at the same time was " Gone With The Wind". Course I didn't know it was color until I was in my late teens since we didn't get out first TV until I was 5 and it was black and white.

It was the color and special effects. The fantasy aspect of the movie and , for its time, had many short people, midgets, or dwarfs in the movie. The book itself was a classic so made the movie that much easier to sell.

It was a very scary movie when I was a kid and I believe it came on TV around Halloween so it made it scarier. The flying monkeys is what got me.

because when dorothy steps out into oz...it goes from black and white to color..it was the first time ever a movie had been made in color...it was awesome...think about it...everything before that point black and white..and after color everywhere..that and that alone is enough to make it in the top 100....but another reason...it was a great movie that talks about life...yeah in a wacky way..about being kind, scared..loving the life you have...and of course there is no place like home...people still talk about things that have come from that movie...the rainbow..the witch...the oz..the shoes...its talked about in other songs other movies

the wizard of oz has a lot more conceptual mythology then what many actually account it for. (you can quote me on that). It is in par with Alice in Wonderland, and many other stories that hold a simple truth to the simple observer, or the complex conundrum to the sophisticate.

it was a classic. the absolute first movie in color, that really set the mark for all movies today. the storyline is easy to follow, and had soo many firsts in the technology business. for that time, the special fx were amazing and everybody rushed out to see it in theaters.
