I just did a minor upgrade by replacing my processor, old one was a p4 1.6ghz and the new one i just tossed in is p4 2.4ghz

problem is , i downloaded the intel processor ID tool and it says

................... Expected ...................... Reported

Speed: ...........2.40 GHz ............ 1.81 GHz
System Bus: .........533 MHz .......... 400 MHz
L2 Cache Memory: ............. 512kb

so it seems the new processor i tossed in aint working at full specs,
do i have to upgrade my bios possibly?

*note* i didn't change MB, just the processor

would appreciate any help on this.. thanks

Last guy was partially right, though its not the multiplier you need to change. Okay here is the deal, CPU speed is determined by clock multiplier x system bus. Those system bus speeds listed are quad pumped, which means 4x there actual speed. So, the expecetd bus speed is supposed to be 133Mhz, times the multiplier of 18 give the expected speed of 2.4Ghz. But for some reason your bus is only running at 100Mhz, which with the 18 multiplier gives the 1.8Ghz speed it is running at. So, to fix it, you need to change the bus speed in the BIOS to what it needs to be, not the multiplier. It is very possible that your motherboard only supports up to 100Mhz bus speed, which would make it impossible to run this new processor at the speed it is supposed to. If you want further help, email me with a little more info, the model number of your computer would help, I assume it is an HP.

Looks like you'll have to go into your BIOS and bump up the bus speed using the multiplier setting. To upgrade your BIOS you have to go to the motherboard manufacturers website. Your need to know the model and revision number for the board. This will be on your manual or on the board itself.
