Ok we have a la5380XTW1 Whirlpool clothes washer which is totaly dead as it won't do anything when turned on. It is currently stuck filled with water and appears to have totaly died. I am thinking it could be a fuse within the washer that has blown, but haven't had any luck finding where it might be located. There is no fuse in the plug and the outlet it is plugged into has been tested and works.

Also if anyone can think of anything else that might cause this I am open to suggestions. Also it is a normal washer with the lid on top and is fairly old only has dials on it. (I couldn't find it on whirlpools website).

Thanks in advance for any help.

Drat. I was really hoping the washer had its own fuse. Nothing is wrong with the fuse box i know that outlet works. I don't think this is going to be an easy solution. I'm betting it is a loose wire somewheres as it seems to have shut off mid spin cycle when it would be shaking etc, but its unlikely that thats something that i can fix. Also this washer will fill at least I know with the lid open and i'm real tempted to say that it will empty though not 100% sure. I know it won't spin with the lid open... I don't think its a lid switch unfortunately. If anyone else has any ideas otherwise i fear i will have to give up and have someone professionally fix it.

Checked the door switch it appears to be intact and it making a nice clicking sound like it usually does when pressed. If it is broken its not obvious.

If it is full of water, it obviously didn't go into the drain/spin cycle. There is usually a door switch that has to be made before a unit will spin. Check to make sure that switch is closed. It could be a tab that fits into a slot that trips the micro switch. The tab is broken? Or there is a little button that the door hits that trips the switch? Is the button broken?
Find that, and you probably will have the washer back in operation.

Washers don't have internal fuses. They rely on home breakers. It is possible the power contact in the lid switch (if it shuts off with the lid open), or the timer has worn out. The other possibility is a loose circuit wire in the plug or the breaker box. Your plug may test ok even if the return circuit (the white wire) is loose. Check between ground and the return side of the plug (larger slot), if you read 110v, the return is open at the breaker box. Turn the breaker off and make sure all connections are tight. You can read a voltage without load with a loose connection.

Some of these answers are correct, some not, there is no belt on this washer.
The switch is probably to blame.

Advance it manually, slowly to each individual operation, push it in, pull it out to see what, if any of the operation will connect and work, especially the selinoid for the valve to get rid of the water. If you can get any of these to work, fine.
I'm betting you can't, the switch is shot.

If the tab on the door, hold the internal switch (safety) down is O.K. you can put a screw driver in here to hold it down while trying these separate operations. It's nothing more then a bypass for safety.

Try manually advancing the cycle timer. If the machine starts somewhere in the cycle, the timer is shot. That is a common cause for nothing happening.

Since the washer filled with water, you can be pretty sure that the plug/cord are good. I'll bet on the timer.

there is a 1 amp / 250 volt rated fuse in my machine, that blows once in awhile. It is a control circuit fuse on my machine. Whirlpool Stack-able.

It Sounds that you either have a bad Timer. Or if you have an electronic system it could be the board. If its a bad wire you can usually spot it. Itl be burnt. Good Luck'

If it's making noise the belt fell off, otherwise the motor went out and it's not hard to replace. (Just time consuming)
