Well although I agree kwilfort's answer was a bit poor, he may end up being right, here is why. Processors fit into a socket on the motherboard, and the type of socket they use changes from time to time. So, to get a newer processor, you would need to also replace the motherboard with one that supports the right type of socket. But then, you would most likely have to get new RAM, because the format of RAM has also changed from your motherboard to now. Your video card will most likely also not work with the new motherboard. So what ends up happening is you have to replace half the parts of the computer just to change the processor, which ends up making it more worth the money to just buy a new computer. Now that doesn't mean there aren't better processors you can get for your current socket, but they will be harder to find, and will only provide a small upgrade. If you are interested though, get in touch with me and I can help you find out what socket you have and what will be compatible.

ok so what you should do is buy a new motherboard and processor. if your budget is really 250 you cant get something great, but for 350 i can find you something. this is a great processor and would cost about 230$
-AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Windsor 3.0GHz Socket AM2 Processor Model ADX6000IAA6CZ
but now you need a new motherboard that can handle this processor.
as for motherboards i dont know much about performance but i assume it wount make a big difference if you aer not overclocking and stuff. i would like to know your old motherboard to know if your ram will be compatible, but lemme show u the ones i found.

for 80$ you can get this
- GIGABYTE GA-M61P-S3 Socket AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 6100 ATX AMD Motherboard

this is 60$
-MSI K9N4 Ultra-F Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 550 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard

MAKE SURE TO SEE THIS...the 80$ one has 4 slots for ram and the 70$ one only has 2 slots, so i TRULEY reccomend the 80$ one.

my idea in the end only goes 60$ or so above your budget and you have a great processor.

it will be easier to buy a new computer because the ram may not be compatible(NOTE:these motherboards hold DDR2 PC800 ram which is not very expensive...1 gb costs 60 i think, you can find 2 gb for 130$) these are just things to consider.
i found these products at www.tigerdirect.com

It all depends on the rest of your computer. Do you know what type of processor you need? Socket type? I suggest going to Newegg.com and looking at some of their deals - cheapest place I know of.

6 months ago I bought an AMD 4400+ 64 x2 (dual core) because I like to have several applications running at the same time without the computer slowing down. The 4000 series in general seem to be pretty good especially for the price. They jumped down almost half the price in such a short time period. For under 150 bucks, you can get something that'll play almost any game there is out there. Then again, that'll also be dependant on the rest of your computer.

You'd be better off buying a new PC.
