I have to write a biographical sketch of an influential scientist and a brief description of his or her discovery and its importance. Who do you recommend? and Why? I would also have a speech based on it.

Also, what are some websites i can read free online books without registering or downloading?

Rachel Carson's Silent Spring. Her work protesting the use of insect destroying chemicals like DDT in the 1960s was light years ahead of her time. The title of the books refers to the fact that if we dont take better care of the environment, one day there will be no birds to sing and we will have a silent spring. Sadly, she died of breast cancer, a direct result of her work. She was an amazing woman, and with Al Gore's film out and Lenardo Di Caprio's coming out soon, Rachel Carson was the predecessor and inspiration to both. Pax - C.

I was going to say Ben Franklin, too. The man did EVERYTHING and most of them very well.

Robert K. Jarvik is an American physician who designed an artificial heart.

We didn't mention Einstein yet, either, did we? Maybe by the time I get this typed, someone will have.

How about Ben Franklin? He was responsible for many interesting scientific discoveries and experiments, such as the invention of the lightning rod to protect churches and other tall buildings from lightning strikes.

Robert Oppenheimer is a very interesting character (he was instrumental in the creation of the atomic bomb and spent the rest of his life coming to terms with the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki).
