how do i know a seller is legit?

i have an item a seller will only finance through yaho finance. i am not sure how to check if this person is legit . am i insured if i get scammed?

If you pay with a major US credit card, you have protection. As far as verification, the only thing I know would be to get them to send you a copy of their passport or birth certificate.
