World War 2 was already in full swing. We entered the war against Japan in December of 1941 after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Contrary to belief we never did declare war on Germany. After the Pearl Harbor, Hitler actually declared war on the U.S. That is when the U.S. went to war against Germany. Hitler thought that America would have their hands full on 2 fronts on different parts of the globe. Hitler was eventually proved wrong.

Don't worry about folks who have nothing better to do, than act like snotty pseudo-intellectuals.
The US entered WW2 in December 1941. However the war in Europe started in 1939, and Japan was fighting in China since 1937. However, they weren't considered "in the war" until they attacked US naval forces in Pearl Harbor Hawaii.
Earlier that year, the Germans, Romanians, Hungarians, Italian, and Finns attacked the USSR in June.
Yugoslavia was occupied in May along with Greece.
The Germans drove back British forces in North Africa, this is the famous "Afrika Korps".
Basically, the Allies were getting beaten, badly in 1941.
(Oh yeah, there's no "right" way to write WW2)

On December 7, 1941 Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. On December 8,1941, FDR declared war against the Japanese Empire .Germany would declare war against the US on December 10th or 11th because of the Tripartite pact of Germany, Japan and Italy.

The War Against Soup.

During this 19 year conflict, many brave minestrones, chowders, bouillions, and stews were ruthlessly destroyed, until Mankind learned to appreciate their assets in complementing a well-balanced meal. People mark this horrendous ordeal by having a bowl of soup with their sandwich, another misunderstood foodstuff that was nearly destroyed during the Horrific Hoagie Holocaust of 1956.
