And replaced with something more useful, like a strip mall?

What a waste, though. Think of how much more we could fit into a strip mall if we were to bulldoze, say, the Capitol building! And in the long run it would end up saving taxpayers money too, since the politicians wouldn't have any wretched black pits from which to perform their evil deeds! Unfortunately that logic doesn't work because they'll just build themselves another hidey-hole, but it's a fun idea anyway.

In all seriousness, though, leave the Vietnam memorial as it is. Not only is it an amazing work of art, it's a solemn tribute to all of the soldiers who gave their lives in the war. Tearing it down -- or indeed, defacing it in any way -- serves only to diminish their sacrifice and demonstrate that we as a people really are incapable of learning from history.

By the way, some of you people haven't one ounce of humor. This question was meant as a joke. I cannot possibly fathom how you people could think this was actually serious. Lighen up a little bit, PLEASE!!

Why? What would be your reason to tear down the memorial?
I think the memorial is FAR more useful that any strip mall.
If you don't like the wall, or appreciate its value, then don't visit the site. I am sure you have a strip mall close by, where you can reflect upon all of you're shopping experiences, and think of all the sacrifices your fellow shoppers made for you.

I don't think that a strip mall would really fit in with the theme of the National Mall. I would like to understand your point. Are you opposed to glorifying war, or opposed to paying respect to people who died in service to their country?
I am a Vietnam Veteran, and I'm not really offended by your question, so much as I am curious.
The Vietnam War gave us, rightly, the term wasted as a synonym for killed. It was an even worse blunder than Iraq, and that is going some.
However, to me, the memorial does not glorify the war, so much as it remembers the boys who died in it.

I don't agree that it should be torn down but, as an aside, I always thought what was most peculiar is that we didn't have a memorial for the millions of civilianskilled in Vietnam (the US government says 2 million, the Vietnamese says 4 million) who largely died because of our bombs and since we didn't allow the country re-unify under the 1954 Paris Peace agreement.

But we do have a memorial for the Holocaust (Not that the holocaust didn't happen and wasn't the worst atrocity in history) which concerns European Jews who didn't die because of the US actions but because of Germany's actions (mostly)....shouldn't that memorial be in Germany, to remind them of what they did?

And so I believe we should have a memorial to remind people of WHAT WE DID in Vietnam, and I don't mean just to our soldiers.

No. A strip mall would not be useful in that area of D.C.

Rolling Thunder will be held the Sunday before Memorial Day. I dare you to come pose that question to a few hundred thousand bikers.

As a Viet Nam vet, myself. Maybe, I should answer your question, with a few of my own?
Why don t we, abort you? Post, numerous, trimesters.
We could use your remains, for fertilizer.
Or maybe, why don t we all kick, your sorry butt?
Everyone, gets exercise.
Too bad, you have such little, respect.
One has to wonder, have you any, "self respect?"

Maybe you should learn some respect for these young men that didn't choose to go to war. After attending our service on Anzac Day to honour those who came home and those that didn't I find this statement quite sickening.I don't agree with war but I will always admire and respect those that serve their country and I am proud to say that as an Australian we treat our diggers as they should be treated and that is with honour and thanks for fighting for our freedom but I am also sure you are in the minority of most Americans.

Maybe what we really need to do is to desecrate the graves
of your family and make an outhouse there instead

You are a lowlife piece of CRAP, those names on that
memorial gave their life so that you are free to say what you
want and I would bet that you are not even a citizen
go back to Iran or where ever the hell you came from

I'll bet you take the window-licking bus to school MORON

It's on the Capital Mall already.

Why not close down all those outdated offices and put some trendy shops in their place.
