A small bird has stayed in my hard, and won't leave... it seems wounded and won't fly. I temporarily housed it inside a cage because there are cats nearby (lots of them) the nest where the baby is from is empty, so apparently the mother is gone... what do I feed it? After I get the usual stupid answers, I would like some serious responses. I know it's best to let the bird back into the wild, but the thing is hurt, and there are cats all over the area (I'm surrounded by lots of neighbors)
Helpful suggestions please

Thank you all for the ideas. Since we talked, the bird has died. There seemed to be nothing to do. It was too late (local vets closed)

If there's an organization like Wildlfe Rescue in your area, call them. if not, call the animal shelter and see if they will take him.
Your're a sweetheart for trying to help.

I'm sorry to here that the bird died. If it were ever to happen again, you would need a small syringe and in case of an emergency, you could use baby food, the kind that comes in a box, that you add water to. Or cream of wheat, mix it with water and thin it out really thin, use the syringe to feed the little bird. Stick the tip in his beak, let just a drop touch his tongue, he/ she will start doing this pumping thing, when they do that, shoot it down his throat. You will be able to see it's crop is full, on it's chest. For a little bird a 1/2 syringe will be plenty, they will probably eat every 4 hours. Make sure it's crop is empty before feeding again. Once again, sorry that I was to late to help. Always keep birds out of drafts, hot and cold

Thanks for the concern first off.
Be careful handling however for many birds do carry diseases.
If it appears to be hurt the most compassionate thing you can do is take to local animal shelter or vet as drop off care.
Until then, crunched up insects or small worms will offer some nourishment.
You are correct however, when the bird is in better health conditions - it should be set free as intended.

ok so where did it fall and how
it might be hurt from the fall and you should leave it there. Or you can bring it in after about a few hours to see if the parents are coming and then take it in and bring it to the vet
or just put it back in the nest

So it really is a touch one fowl? Is it feathered? it will be a fledgling that has not yet realized to fly...they go away the nest beforehand they can fly and the mummy and father care and feed them until eventually they do. might want to you be mistaking his lack of ability to fly as an damage or is it something for sure like a damaged wing?? no matter if it really is a fledgling, positioned it contained in the most secure position you could (outdoors), in a tree, scrub, etc. the position with slightly of luck a cat will not observe it. the mummy and father might want to come back to look after it. no matter if it really is vitally injured you ought to take it to an section organic world rehab.

Look in your local yellow pages and see if there are any carers for injured wild animals and birds in your area. They will know how to look after it, rehabilitate it and set it into the wild.
Good luck, I hope the little bird is ok.

ok, first i wouls take it to either a vet or a pet store like Petco or soemthing.
Ask them what to feed it and so on and so forth. You cant keep a wild bird too long....my fmaily tried it and it died because it never flew

You may want to research what bird it is, and what foods it enjoys eating. If it is worms, you can go around diggin for those, or maybe it will be seeds. You can always get good info with some research.

Well picking it up with your bare hnds is a bad idea! So don't try that!! Pick it up with a towl and then feed it without touching it! Wait till it starts to flap its wings when it does let it loose!

aww so caring. Well my mom would leave out moistened rice (so it wouldn't have any weird side effects) for the sparrows that always fly around the house. Bread grains... things like that.. haha
