my computer just decided to stop working today so i called tech support and they told me to restore to factory setting. So i did and in the middle of doing so he remembered that we didnt back up my stuff before begining and he didnt know what to do. So now im stuck with a machine that has none of my work on it. I desperatly need this data. Is there anything i can do? I have a pavillion notebook that was purchased with vista preinstalled if that helps any.

Not quite sure if you can recover that on Vista. There are some wonderful system recovery tools, just Google that. Otherwise, you can send it out to a data recovery company and get the info back for anywhere from $800-$2000. Kind of expensive!

By restore to factory settings I take it you mean you ran the system recovery /setup program.

If that is the case you have overwritten all the data, the first thing the recovery does is format which erases the drive.
