Throatofwinter wins the internet. :)
All the links he gives are good. In particular, as others have said, Avast and AVG (Grisoft's free AV scanner) are excellent. Numerous tests by many different organizations have found these two to perform very well, sometimes even beating out the commercial (pay-for-use) applications.
And ignore those saying you shouldn't use free software. There are cases of free software being bad, but there are many free software products that are as good or better than the commercial versions. The computer security field is particularly well-represented by the free software movement, and some of the best tools are the legally free tools.
After years of working in computer security, I rarely recommend commercial security products for individuals or businesses.

Avast free for home personal use.

Nortons is pure garbage. If you want to spend money don't waste it on Nortons. Plus when you remove, the program it will leave atleast 375 fragments hidden in your registry and everywhere else in your pc.
Spend your money on what I use below. One time fee for life.
Read the webpage and if you like what you read this is the antivirus of choce I have used for over ten years and never one virus.
By culture the Chinese are very secret just about everything and that includes their software.
I have used for years an antivirus program out of Beijing, China that is also used by the Government of China.
This antivirus program does not have the Govt. permission to be rated with all other know antivirus programs.
What I can assure you is that you pay only a one time fee for life that will include all auto updates, and all new versions for life. The Chinese don't believe in having to pay an annual fee for updates or new versions.
I can tell you their technology is light years ahead of any other known antivirus software out there.
If you open a webpage and there is a hidden virus it will clean in realtime. Anything that you download and has even a trace code, it will kill the download and ask you to upload the trace code for investigation. In real time the upload will tell you if it is clean or not.
Will not allow you download, Real Player, because there is a hidden file that is a trojan keylogger. The file was uploaded and traced back to the United States Army, Intelligence Services out of London, England. (Removal of the file Real Player will reject the installation).
Read for yourself at their webpage. I have never had one virus in ten plus years. Plus it will catch any progam with it's dynamic defense system, for software that you download and it does not have a publisher or lic., included.
Twister Trojan Antivirus V7
Very low on resources with scanner running in background.

If you want to detect all the malware infections you may have, go to http://www.infectedornot.com and run a TotalScan.
The site is part of a new campaign from Panda Software to raise awareness on the malware problem. They let you use their Panda NanoScan and Panda TotalScan tools for free, and in exchange, they collect statistics that are presented in that same web site.
With these tools you can be pretty sure that you will check your pc for every malware form there is. They have more virus definitions than anything else out there.

Don't do that! I can save your computer!!! Have saved many!
Just think about this for a second...if FREE programs and store shelf protects were protecting our computers ....would we be at war with cyber crime? Each PC that is not protected is scanned atleast 17 times a day! People are fooled with these 'protections' that they are being protected...they are not! Out of all of the individuals that are online ONLY 10% are actually protected! The other 90% ARE NOT! And if you are not using Corporate Level type of security ...YOU ARE NOT PROTECTED PERIOD! I am proud to say that I am among that 10% ...and can 'breathe' when my family and I are online! We are at MAJOR war with cyber crime! Look it up! 2007 News on Cyber Crime
