He LOVES art and sports. He says he wants to be an artist when he grows up. He has taken some art classes and has "Meet The Masters" at school. I'd love for him to love his room and want to show it to his new friends as we recently moved to a new area and he hasn't had any friends over yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe frame pictures of famous artists and their prints, along with his favorite sports in action. Also paint funky artsy colors in his room and pictures of art utensils. Things like that can really spice it up, especially using textured furniture. But you don't want to make it too busy because, like they say, the color of a room can affect your mood while you're in it. An energetic room means an energetic little boy =)

I'd say let him paint at least some part of the room himself.

I might also suggest looking into either (or both!) magnetic and chalkboard paint :

(there are lots of other sources)

One would let him write on the walls and be eraseable, the other would allow him to constantly hang and rearrange drawings/posters and photos without putting alot of holes in the wall. He could perhaps even use the wall as an easel.

My grandmother gave me a portable easel and one of those big boxes of art supplies when I was about that age. It was perhaps the best gift of all.

You can do a Renaissance theme, you know, when all this artsy stuff started. Have some famous Renaissance paintings as a mural on the walls. Leonardo, Michaelangelo, Raphael, and Donatello were all great turtles, uh, I mean, artists.

lemme make one big recommendation. i spent weeks redoing my kids rooms to what they wanted them to be. my daughters was flowers with a lil painted picket fence around the room with hand painted butterflies and dragonflies. my son was space...with hand painted glow in the dark constellations and wallpaper planets. both rooms turned out gorgeous! They were only into them for a few weeks and wanted to change them. I learned to paint the walls a solid color and hang things on the walls or cover them with pics and posters to theme them. Kids change and grow so quickly and their interests for one thing or another sometimes last only a little while. The only other thing I would consider is letting them do what they want...free-for-all. As bad as we think it might look....they believe their creations are the coolest things.

I want to be a writer, and I had a great idea for my future room. I'm going to cover the whole thing in ruled white paper and let myself write to fil it up. COver his room in panels, that way he can draw whatever he wants, and then he can switch it as he gets older, and you can hang pictures of famous artists. Tell your son good luck, and I hope I can own one of his paintings (or whatever medium he hopes to go into)!

a sports mural would be great, and it would be even better if he helped paint it himself (as everyone else had suggested).

also, hang some of his artwork on the wall or display some on a shelf.

You should ask him what he wants and use his ideas and make them better by adding things to make his idea better.
