I loved art and crafts from the first time I tried them in Blue Birds (first year of Camp Fire.) My parents weren't artsy, so I had only occasional chances to do art. By college, it was the only class that interested, so I started there.
I once asked a professor about how to make money doing art, and when he told me how competitive and unlucrative it was, I sort of gave up. I didn't know what to do, so I just took some classes that were general education courses. Eventually I found landscape architecture, and truly loved it. Alas, there was a class in the major I just couldn't pass. I took it twice, all the way through, but just couldn't do it.
I was at a loss at that point, but decided that art was my last hope.
That turned out to be the best thing for me. Not only did I relate to all my classes, but I got along with the other students in art better than any other major or classes I took. I really fit in there. And I was in my late forties by that time. I've done a lot of growing and learning about how the world works since my first art class in 1971. Now I have much more confidence that I can have a career as a practicing artist, and how to go about it. It was a long journey, but looking back, I regret nothing. There is so much to learn about the world, and I loved learning all the things I did. I also use much of my time in landscape architecture to my benefit, even though I did not graduate in it. I do designs for my friends and family, and sometimes for others.
You might want to know that career studies show that most people change careers (not jobs, but complete careers) 6 times in a lifetime. The best college advice I got in this area was to finish a degree, any one I could. Then if I didn't like what I was doing, I could go back and take more classes to change to something I loved.
Good luck to you. Also, many colleges have a group of classes they call "Freshman Seminars." They may have a different name at different colleges, but what they are is a broad view of professions taught by the people who are at the top of their fields so they can really give you an idea of the jobs that are out there and what you can do in a lot of fields of study. They looked so fascinating, I wanted to take them, but I transferred in as a Junior and they wouldn't let us take them!

I am in 11th grade. I be graduating next year. It is very wise of you to decide now, for choices are so unlimited! While others winced at the sometimes the colorful things in life, I was captivated to help people for a living. I am very convinced that nursing is my calling from God. I live in an underdeveloped country in South America; education is very limited. The chance to go study in US is very vague, but I have great hope. If that is what God wills.

I am a Christian; i believe it is each person's moral responsibility to care about each other. However, there are many fields in life in which you can please God. I chose nursing, because i can assist other people while i also can preach to them like a missionary. When i am married or such, I wish to be a mother and a housewife and occupied as an author at home, writing books of my faith and life and the like. I know this is so long term, but my brother taught me since i have the chance i should make wise choices early. My brother did not get the chance to study his like; instead he has to support my family.

I hope you could make up your mind. Consider what you like. I work in the weekends in a clothing store. I greatly enjoy it, but it is not something i would want to profess in. My family owns a car audio place nor am i intersted. I chose based on my passion. Even though we dont know if it is what God plans for us, but we can always pray for it. If you would like to share experiences, email me. :)

Goodnight.

PS. I have this exact conversation just with my friend on the phone.

I have always loved children. So I chose the teaching profession. I am a preschool teacher. What could be more fun than playing with 2-5 yr olds all day. You get to color, play on a playground, play with playdoh, bubbles, sing and dance, and find out what Dr. Suess is all about. Oh, and lets not forget that all important nap during the day. You can also act like a complete goofball and the kids still think you are wonderful. Who has a more fun job than me?

I feel like my career found me. I know that seems weird, but I went to college to study something I thought I loved. Once I started taking classes toward that subject though, I realized it wasn't for me. It didn't feel right.

I evaluated the courses I did love. I loved my English classes. I loved leading discussions in those courses. I started looking into education and studying all aspects of English literature and creative writing. As I learned more, I realized what I wanted.

The minute I stepped into a classroom for the first time, I knew I'd found my calling.

But I'll be real with you. if I hadn't, I would've tried somewhere else. Something else.

It's never to late to find a dream job. The moment I feel that teaching isn't fulfilling, I will try and find my next calling. It's all about allowing yourself to really immerse yourself in what you love. Do what you love. Don't be swayed by money. You'll be fine.

I made a list of all my interests. Then I thought about which one of them would pay me the most and did a search on Yahoo! for colleges in my area that offered that program of study.
I happen to be really good at everything in The Arts without really trying, so it was hard for me to choose at first because I had a lot of different interests, but I eventually decided that I wanted to do computer art, so I decided Graphic Design would be a good career for me.
Also, you can do a free search on http://www.fastweb.com
(after you sign up) to search for scholarship opportunities.
I hope this helps! Try and keep your grade point average a 3.0 or higher! Good Luck!

Dream job. Find out what is it that you like first. You still have time to plan. It is a loaded question because you might not feel the same way about a decision you made about a career choice at one time. Then you find out that is not cut out to be what you really want to do.

Take a variety of interesting courses and electives and see if you are really passionate about one of them.

I am a junior in high school and I am interested in Chemistry and Psychology. I am currently taking AP Chemistry and will take AP Psychology next year (senior year). I also like math and will take AP BC Calculus next year. This year, I also took a Graphics Art elective and I love the class!

Have options. Don't stick to one choice yet. We are still young and have plenty of time. Don't worry, you will find something!

I knew from a young child what I wanted to do. I wanted to be a soldier. I joined the army as soon as I could and stayed for 23 years. The only regret I have is that I can't go back and do it all over again. It was a great life.

Ya I really cant decide either. I have no idea what I want to do at all! It sorta worries me because I want to be successful but no career=no money=no success. So to answer your question, maybe do some job shadowing or just research different careers and see what you like.

unfortunately i didn't. I just settled. Take time and get your basics out of the way and then decide. Unless you are really passionate about something I don't think it is fair to expect a 16, 17 or even and 18 year old to know what they want to do for the rest of their life. Good luck to you
