Yes you can but not for the developing and storing the data it is OS not a client sharing system ok. Server is the os which shares all the resoures of the clients . And even xp cannot share more than 10 clients in a network when you install it as a server.

Well you can use any Operating System as a server, but those Operating Systems designed to be used as servers will generally give much better perforamance and stability.
Limitation of transactions it can serve with client computers?? What exactly are you asking? Do you mean client licenses? Not sure what you mean
If it were me, I would setup a linux based file server if that is all you need. You didn't say what you needed to "serve".

XP can be a basic server by sharing file, print and web services, etc. But it is limited to 10 connections total. You can test with 10, but for more than that you will need to look at Windows 2003 or some other server product.

The web server, IIS, that comes with Windows, does limit the number of connections from clients to 10 (I believe). They want you to buy Windows Server if you are serious about hosting a server. I hate that.
I do not understand your second question because if you do not have a server set up already how can you have any limitation on connections if there is nothing to connect to?

Technically you can run a server under DOS. Get an OS that is designed to act as a server, in other words without all the other baggage that comes with Windows XP

Also don't forget that You can get up to 10 connections with XP but depending on the system's resources and what each client is going to be doing....you might not even get 10
